Age 39 · Dad to Zoe & Marcus Jr.
A life how-to, written for the two people who matter most.
I'm 39 years old, healthy, and — by most measures — completely fine. So why am I writing this?
Because I became a father, and fatherhood does something to you. It makes the future feel precious and terrifyingly uncertain at the same time. I look at Zoe (6) and Marcus Jr. (3) and I think: they deserve to know who I am. Not just the dad who makes pancakes on Sundays and does silly voices at bedtime — but what I actually believe, what I've learned the hard way, and how I try to live.
Tomorrow is never promised. I know that now in a way I didn't at 25. So this is my gift to them, written while I'm here to write it. A manual. A love letter. A confession. Everything I want them to know when they're ready to hear it.
Things I figured out the hard way, written so you don't have to.
Sealed for the right moment. Read them when you get there.
Integrity
Do the right thing when nobody's watching. Especially then.
Growth
Always be the person who's trying to get better at something.
Presence
The people in the room deserve the version of you that isn't looking at a phone.
Responsibility
Own your outcomes. All of them — the failures especially.
Levity
Life is serious enough. Find the funny parts. Protect your sense of humour.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia — the loudest baby in the ward, apparently
Graduates high school; first job: grocery store, 5am shifts
Graduates university; first failed business idea (vending machines)
Finds work he actually loves; starts building something real
Marries Alicia — the best decision he's made before or since
Zoe is born. Everything changes.
Marcus Jr. arrives. The house is very loud.
Writes this — while they're small, while he's here, because tomorrow is never promised
Don't wait for a reason. The best time to write it is while you're here, while you're you, right now.
