The Signature
Difference

Most legacy sites record what happened. The Signature experience also preserves what shaped the person, what they value, and what they want future generations to understand—conducted personally by Dr. Colleen Long, Psy.D., a licensed psychologist and writer.

Why a psychologist makes all the difference

A journalist asks what you did. A memoir coach helps you remember. A psychologist understands why you became who you are — and can write it with that depth.

Journalist / biographer

  • •Records events & achievements
  • •Structures a timeline
  • •Captures the public self

Memoir coach

  • •Helps you find your story

  • •You still do most of the work

Dr. Colleen Long, Psy.D.

  • •Understands how they think and why
  • •Writes the interior life, not just the timeline
  • •Preserves what they choose to share

The Signature Process

Four stages. One irreplaceable result.

01

Guided life-story interviews

Dr. Long conducts structured, non-clinical life-story conversations for writing purposes—a purposeful exploration of what shaped the person, their values, defining relationships, turning points, and recurring themes. This is the foundation that makes the final story truly theirs.

02

A one-of-a-kind blueprint of who they are

From these conversations, Dr. Long builds a personal Legacy Blueprint—a narrative portrait of pivotal turning points, accumulated wisdom, important relationships, values, and what the person most wants remembered. No two blueprints are alike because no two lives are.

03

Ghostwritten, literary-quality narrative in their voice

Using the blueprint, Dr. Long — who is also a trained writer — crafts a polished, literary narrative. Not a timeline of events. A story of a person: their interior life, their humour, their contradictions, the reflections they choose to share. Every detail is grounded in their account and reviewed with them.

04

Family review & refinement

The draft is shared with the family for review. Stories can be adjusted, additions made, and the final site is refined until every word feels exactly right. The result is something families describe as the most meaningful thing they've ever created together.

Illustrative Example

The same life, written two ways

These fictional examples show two levels of narrative detail. Real work uses only information the storyteller provides and approves.

Self-written / DIY

"My father grew up in the 1940s in a small town. He worked hard and raised a family. He loved fishing and was always there for us. He retired after 35 years and spent time with his grandchildren. He passed away in 2019."

"Walter grew up in post-war Ohio when the whole country was rebuilding itself, and he was rebuilding himself right alongside it. The youngest of five, he learned early that you had to be useful to be loved — a belief that stayed with him long after it needed to. He became a man who showed up. Not with words, but with presence: the kind of father who didn't say "I love you" easily but drove four hours in a blizzard when you called. He fished not because he liked fish but because the water was the only place he could sit still. In thirty-five years at the plant, he never once called in sick. When he retired, he cried — privately, in his truck — because for the first time in his life, he didn't know who he was without the work. His grandchildren never knew that version of him. They only knew the man who had finally, in his seventies, learned to rest."

Dr. Colleen Long, Psy.D.

Dr. Long is a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of eTernal. She brings together two rare skills: the clinical training to understand how people are shaped by their experiences, and the literary sensibility to write about it with beauty and truth. Her approach combines guided reflection with carefully reviewed storytelling.

The Signature process uses structured life-story conversations and guided reflection for writing purposes. It is not a psychological evaluation, personality assessment, psychological testing, diagnosis, psychotherapy, treatment, or prediction, and it does not create a psychologist-patient relationship.
